White Cane Day at the Coventry Woods Festival

E-mail Print PDF

White Cane Days was held as part of the Coventry Woods Festival last Sunday (May 18).  The weather was a bit better than last year, and there were a lot more attendees.  The goat race and the cow plop bingo were big attractions, as well as a variety of food.  Folks also had the opportunity to rent a goat.

The Leos had an obstacle course while the Lion Cubs set up some games for kids.  Both were quite busy all day.

Rather than seeking donations, we used White Cane Days to talk to folks in the community and show them what Lions are about as well as market the Blues BBQ.  Lions Terry, Leah, John, Chuck, Bob R. and Chris manned the table handing out information on the Blues BBQ as well as talking to folks about Lionism in general.  The White Cane Committee had created some new posters that highlighted club activities with lots of pictures to attract attention and describe what we do.

Five BBQ tickets were sold, and several folks said they already had tickets.  In general there was a lot of interest in the BBQ with many folks saying they would come.

Lion Secretary Barry, please accept this report as part of your minutes.

Respectfully submitted,

The White Cane Committee

An East Vincent Lion Cub Helps Load Truck With Food Drive Items

East Vincent and North Coventry Elementary Schools held a canned food drive during December to supplement the Food Baskets. The second grade classes continued an annual tradition of community service by collecting over 400 canned food items to be added to the Christmas food baskets.

Twelve Lions (six teams of two) delivered the packages to six different delivery routes in the townships of the Owen J. Roberts School District. The Lions deliver food baskets three time a year; Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.  All of the second grade classes in the elementary schools in the OJR school district help by having a food drive prior to each holiday. Each school chooses a holiday to have their drive. The Lion Cubs at each school join in the food drive as well as facilitating the second grade classes in their efforts.
