14p KidSight

Seven years ago, a small group of 14 P Lions attended a seminar on eye screening for preschool children at the 2010/2011 MD14 State Convention in Harrisburg, PA. That seminar motivated the group to start a screening program in District 14 P. Then VDG Phil Shober decided to form a KidSight screening program as the District Project for his year as District Governor. At the start of the 2011/2012 year a Board of Trustees was formed, and promotion and fundraising campaign were started. Due to the efforts of the trustees and clubs of 14 P we were able to raise in excess of $20,000 ($15,000 donated by Coventry Lions Club alone) by November of 2011. With these funds we formed District 14 P Lions KidSight Program Inc. (a 503 (C) (3) foundation) and purchased two Spot Vision Screening Cameras. Over the years we’ve added four more Spot Cameras, two by the Foundation and one each by the West Chester Club and the Avon Grove Club.

We have formed a partnership with the Vision Resource Center of Berks County, a local Blind Association. They were using an antiquated screening system using charts to screen children in preschool and daycare centers. The trustees decided to provide the VRC with a Spot Camera and volunteers to help screen. With the help from the Clubs of Berks and Chester Counties and the VRC we have been able to screen over 20,000 children in the past 7 years.

Over the years we had to turn down screening opportunities at festivals and community functions, due to the sensitivity of the camera to sunlight when screening outdoors. In July 2017 the Central Berks Lions Club approached the foundation expressing interest in purchasing another spot camera, upon the learning about the problems of screening outdoors, they decided to purchase a utility trailer and the necessary accessories to allow us to screen at festivals and community functions. The addition of the screening trailer will enable us to increase the number of screenings in Berks and Chester Counties.

Yours in Lionism

The Coventry Woods Events Committee for the annual Bonfire requested help from the Leos in the following areas: parking donation collection, kid’s games supervision, and night hike leaders.

Colleen Skelton, member of the North Coventry Parks & Recreation Commission, had this to say about the attending Leos:

"I am always in awe of the maturity and kindness these young adults show when put in a position of responsibility in a public event. They are a great example of the future we hope to see. They all jumped right in to help where needed without prior notice. They formed an assembly line to pack up the s'mores bags and manned the table to sell them. I felt very confident leaving them with the money to count and collect as needed.
I watched as a young man knelt down to the child's level to give them their prize at the games. And another student lean down to their level to hand a younger child a bean bag while they were playing the bean bag toss. Not a big deal to some, but the children smiled back.
You have a great group of students. I understand there are over 250 students in the Leos this year. What a great start to community service and our future leaders.
Thank you again and many students said they would be back in the spring to help with the festival even though they completed their hours for the year."

On Saturday 13 Lions worked for one hour and 45 minutes to clean up 24 bags of trash, which is a new record for a fall clean up. Luckily the weather was ideal. Thanks to all that showed up!

HS Leo Club Inducts 50 New Members

On June 1st. 50 new members joined the ranks of the already large Leo Club at OJR. Over 50 incumbent members met the criteria set before them to maintain their standing as a Leo. With Graduation and the end of the school year just days away, the High School Leos are still involved in volunteering in activities that benefit our community. Recently two activities. The Battle of the Bands and a Super Smash Brothers Tournament, helped raise funding for some of the community services the Leos provide. Please check out the myriad of activities and service projects the Leos have been involved in this year by clicking on "Youth Programs" and "Leo Clubs"
